Known as the “opal capital of the world,” Coober Pedy was founded in 1915 following Willie Hutchison’s discovery of opal. The name of the town comes from the Aboriginal word “kupa-piti,” which translates to “white man’s hole”. Famous for its unusual “dugouts,” or underground homes, Coober Pedy was constructed to provide relief from the intense heat throughout the day.
Fast fwd over 100 years and Coober Pedy is a place where travelers stop in when travelling the Stuart Hwy to see its unique surrounding.
